SRINAGAR, May 6: In a powerful statement on Wednesday, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti condemned the ruling National Conference (NC) for leveraging religious scripture to deflect criticism from their governance failures. She urged political parties to keep religion out of political discourse?
Mufti expressed her concerns during a press conference, stating, “For God’s sake, do not drag Quran into politics. They (NC) are doing this to hide their failures over the past two years of being in government. People are disheartened with them.” Her remarks come as a direct response to the NC’s demand that she and her MLAs publicly swear by the Quran regarding their voting stance in the last Rajya Sabha polls.
Recent revelations from a Right to Information (RTI) request disclosed that the PDP did not appoint a chief agent for the Rajya Sabha elections held in October last year. This brought about allegations from the NC, suggesting that PDP’s three MLAs may have cast their votes for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Mufti’s accusations against the NC also included their handling of critical issues faced by residents. She highlighted, “Houses are being demolished under the garb of fighting drugs. Earlier the same thing was done under the pretext of fighting terrorism. Employees are being summarily dismissed while open merit students are going through tormenting times. All this government has done so far is being a mute spectator.”
By dragging religious topics into their political maneuvering, the National Conference risks alienating constituents who feel neglected by their policies. Mufti asserted that while political competition is a norm, parties must refrain from employing religion as a weapon in their tactics.
The former chief minister’s statements come at a time when the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir is particularly tense, with various parties vying for public support amid accusations of governance ineptitude. These developments reflect growing discontent among citizens regarding the effectiveness of their elected officials.
