178 Indians Among Hundreds Missing After Nepal Flash Floods

At least 178 Indian nationals are among hundreds reported missing after catastrophic flash floods struck the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers in Nepal, according to an announcement by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) on Thursday.

The floods have wreaked havoc across several districts, particularly in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha, leading to significant damage to infrastructures such as roads and bridges. As recovery operations continue, local officials have confirmed that 644 travelers, including 127 Nepalis, remain unaccounted for.

The NTB’s latest update detailed the tragic situation that unfolded when torrential rain caused sudden flooding in the region. In addition to the missing Indians, officials indicated that other foreign nationals include 53 Ukrainians, 35 Australians, and 25 Canadians, among others.

As of now, recovery efforts have located 175 bodies, but many local residents and tourists still remain unaccounted for. The Nepal Embassy has indicated that approximately 476 people from 28 countries have been reported missing. However, authorities continue to verify these numbers as ongoing search and rescue operations progress.

The situation remains fluid, with various agencies reporting provisional figures that the authorities aim to reconcile as more information becomes available from the impacted areas.

The natural disaster has severely disrupted local infrastructure, with extensive damage to transportation routes. In response, Nepal’s security forces are conducting an intense operation, deploying helicopters and ground teams for rescue missions.

While the floods have caused significant destruction in Nepal, National Disaster Response Force Inspector General Narendra Singh Bundela confirmed that no adverse flood impact has been reported in the Indian border areas.
