Mehbooba Mufti Highlights Generational Divide in India

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti responded sharply to Prime Minister Modi’s recent video, which discussed forgiving students who protested against him. She emphasized the existence of two distinct Generation Zs in India, one experiencing inherited opportunities, while the other, particularly in Kashmir, faces inherited curfews and trauma.

During his address, Modi asked for compassion toward youth that had used profanity in a protest at Jantar Mantar. However, Mufti argued that this act of sympathy reflected a fundamental misunderstanding of the challenges facing Kashmiri youth. “Kashmiri youth seek neither sympathy nor charity, only dignity, equal opportunity, political space, and the freedom to dream without fear,” she stated.

Mufti pointed out the harsh realities in Kashmir, where young individuals contend with curfews, internet shutdowns, and high unemployment rates. “If compassion is to define India’s future, let it begin with Kashmir,” she urged, highlighting the dire need for systemic change to elevate the conditions of Kashmir’s youth.
