Assam continues to battle devastating floods, affecting 1.92 lakh individuals across districts like Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Charaideo. The recent update from officials indicates two more fatalities, pushing the total death toll to 82.
The flood situation has shown signs of improvement since Thursday, when over two lakh residents endured hardships across eight districts. However, rivers Dikhow and Dhansiri remain in a “severe flood situation,” particularly in Sivasagar and Numaligarh, prompting authorities to advise caution.
Approximately 13,000 people have found refuge in 54 relief camps set up by the state. Additionally, 26 relief distribution centres remain operational, providing support to 5,384 individuals. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are actively engaged in relief operations, supporting affected families and providing essential resources.
The state government is taking proactive measures, including reaching out to insurance companies and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) to expedite the processing of claims. The focus is on ensuring these entities grant moratoriums to customers impacted by the floods.
Officials confirmed that two fatalities occurred recently, both from Sivasagar and Charaideo, increasing the flood-related death toll. The hardest-hit areas include Charaideo, with 77,456 affected, Sivasagar with 63,492, and Jorhat, where 34,067 individuals face challenges.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a special cabinet meeting will convene on August 5 to discuss the urgency of settling claims for damaged vehicles, livestock, and properties with both private and government insurance entities.
During a significant meeting of the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC), the government confirmed a six-month moratorium on loans for flood-affected residents in four primary districts: Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat.
This assistance targets those enduring excessive hardship due to the floods. Chief Minister Sarma reassured the public of the government’s commitment, stating, “As floods affect four districts of Assam, our government stands firmly with every affected family.”
He highlighted that over ₹41 crore has been approved under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, aimed at providing support for 9,289 beneficiaries in these flood-impacted regions.
The Chief Minister urged the Power Department to ensure that the Assam Power Distribution Corporation Ltd facilitates direct transfers to beneficiaries’ bank accounts by Tuesday, ensuring swift distribution of aid.
As Assam navigates this crisis, the government’s actions reflect a commitment to assist its citizens during this challenging period. The collaborative efforts of disaster response agencies and local authorities play a critical role in supporting recovery and rehabilitation initiatives.
