Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have arrested a 30-year-old software employee for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account and posting abusive, defamatory, and sexually explicit comments targeting a local woman. This troubling incident, which underscores the issue of online harassment, calls for greater vigilance in social media use.
The accused, identified as a resident of Kachiguda, reportedly targeted a politically exposed woman from Hyderabad. According to V Aravind Babu, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Cyber Crimes, the man created the fake profile in October 2025 to post objectionable comments on a video featuring the woman, originally uploaded by the “Pura Local” Instagram channel.
The police began their investigation after the woman filed a formal complaint regarding the incident. Authorities registered a case under Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act, as well as Sections 79 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These legal provisions address cyber harassment and defamation.
Using the pseudonymous account, the accused allegedly sought to conceal his identity while posting offensive content with the explicit aim of defaming and harassing the complainant. Law enforcement officers seized one mobile phone from his possession, which they believe holds substantial evidence regarding his online activities.
In light of this incident, police officials have urged social media users to be more proactive in handling abusive online behavior. A key piece of advice includes taking detailed screenshots of any abusive profiles or comments, including timestamps, before reporting or blocking such accounts. This information acts as critical evidence in investigations.
The Cybercrime unit has also emphasized the importance of verifying unknown social media accounts before engaging with them. Users are encouraged to avoid sharing or commenting on unverified or inflammatory content, which can escalate harassment and misinformation.
The arrest serves as a crucial reminder of the growing issue of online defamation, particularly targeted at women in public life. As social media platforms continue to evolve, the responsibility of users to maintain a respectful online environment becomes increasingly critical.
